Questions and Answers...
Is windsurfing expensive?
- Na, not really, don't forget wind and water are FREE!
- Alright, so you won't be using local estuaries or sea shores at first (actually it's extremely advisable you don't) so inland reservoirs and lakes are your first stop which are about a fiver an hour including hire of board, rig, wetsuit, buoyancy aid, etc.
- If you are thinking of rushing out to buy your own board, a 'good' second hand board and rig (sail, mast & boom) can set you back about 2-300 quid, but take plenty of expert advice - there are many pitfalls.
Is windsurfing hard to learn?
- So long as you are confident in the water (i.e you can swim a few yards) and keen to learn,
'you'll find it a breeze!'
- Alright, so you won't be performing 'Water Starts' or 'Carve Gybes' at first, but remember your windsurfing success is only equalled by you enthusiasm and willing.
- Ensure you are sailing the right equipment in relation to your body size, body weight and wind conditions. If your board volume is too low or your sail too large for instance, you will only encourage frustration and a cold trickle of water down the back of your wetsuit!
Do I need to be a fit person to be able to windsurf?
- You can be of any age from 7 to 77 and upwards, virtually any size or shape and any level of fitness.
- Alright, obviously the fitter you are the less you're body's gonna ache down the pub afterwards! The truth is you don't realise how exhausted you really are until you go home.
- Having said all that, there is no better way of getting fit or there are no better reasons for 'getting fit', depending on how you look at it. So what are you waiting for?
