Board components and deck fittings Allows for repositioning of the mast fore and aft, operated by a foot pedal at the end of the track. In light winds the board will plane earlier if the mast is forward. In heavier winds the mast should be positioned aft for better performance. As a beginner, the mast is best left central on the mast track. Daggerboard These are found mainly on long and mid-length boards, their function is to aid stability in light winds and improve upwind sailing. They generally retract fully into the hull behind the slot flusher when not necessary, such as in downwind reaches, some can be repositioned fore and aft and some removed completely. Skeg/Fin
Without these the board would not steer and have not directional stability up wind. The deeper the shape of the fin the better the upwind performance. Not necessary for the beginner, a certain level of competence is required. These help improve steering in planning conditions and help keep the sailor in contact with the board. Footstraps can usually be repositioned further aft on the deck as competence improves. |
